The Distributed Business Model

Well, Come Aboard site induction web-ware

The Distributed Business Model (DBM) is best described as decoupled, independently owned businesses sharing a common web-ware solution that services a business niche.

That sounds interesting. What does it mean?

Web-ware; a software solution that is hosted on the web. This is usually some variation of a Content Management System or database interface. The software is developed to service a specific business need.

Decoupled; the DBM is independently owned businesses operating completely independently of each other, yet all having the same purpose. Success. However, if one business fails, the other businesses are unaffected, indeed oblivious.

The DBM is attractive to entrepreneurs looking to build stable online businesses. Businesses they own. Businesses with a built-in, designed from the ground up, residual passive income.

I don't have the technical knowledge to run an online business.

The DBM is a marketing and sales business model. The technical side of the business is taken care of with the development of the web-ware. That includes a well designed user interface.

What you have to do, after you've decided to take the plunge, is register your business in your juristiction. Open your business bank account. Start looking for your first customer. Sign a contract. All of it IRL and you are doing it.

Sign on for your 6 week free trial and work with your client to create the Induction or On boarding course. You charge your client what you think is an appropriate fee for your service. Then there is a monthly maintenance fee for future updates and site visitor management.

What are the costs?

There's the cost of setting up your business. The cost will depend on what type of business you set up and the associated fees in your jurisdiction. As you can see, you are literally making all of the business decisions. How can that be a scam?

After the 6 week free trial there is an AUD $100 monthly fee per client to use the web-ware. This is a tax deductable business cost for you. Your services are a tax deductable cost for your client. At no point is it necessay for you to share your business details. There is no provision in the website for you to do so. You have full control over your business.

What if I want to get big and need to employ people?

Create sub accounts for employees to logon. You're the Administrator of the web-ware. There is no extra cost. No limit on sub accounts. No limit on clients. It's all up to you.

AI automation and robots. They'll change everything. It's better to wait and see what happens.

Yes. The robots are coming. There's going to be a whole new set of safety regulations following, regarding human/robot inter-action in the workplace. Every existing business with an induction solution is going to need to update it. Every business, with any sense, is going to require induction services to avoid the ensuing litigation.

So, yes you can wait. Those that don't will corner a piece of a growing market. People are always going to visit worksites. Even if it's just to repair robots. Safety is a growth industry.

Bespoke Content Management Systems.

Not SharePoint.

A Content Management System should improve office efficiency by around 30% within 6 months. More importantly, it collects data on how your business operates. This is an important first step in automating office procedures.

How does a CMS improve efficiency?

Let's look at a typical modern workplace. Microsoft Excel spreadsheets are how work gets done in the office. The Microsoft Office software library is the office staple. Let's look at end of year.

As the next financial year approaches every department spends time "rolling" the spreadsheets "forward" to the next year. Typically this will be people copying and renaming spreadsheets. Archiving old files to some sub directory. Cleaning all the data out of the new spreadsheets. This is all non-productive time being wasted. It's downtime scheduled into your office procedures.

Everyday people wait until the data entry for the last period has been completed and the spreadsheet closed before they can perform their tasks. This is downtime scheduled daily.

A manager searching the file system for the current version of a spreadsheet finally, after 20 frustrating minutes, finds it, only to find an employee has left it open and gone home. Now it's read only. This is all downtime of the most expensive type.

A bespoke CMS solution starts with a database. The data entry stops going into spreadsheets and is centralised. From there, reports are delivered on request. The data is always current.

Spreadsheets are now linked to the database so the required analysis can be accomplished. Once the spreadsheet is setup, there is no need ot create a new version. The data is always current by refreshing the spreadsheet, which can be programmed to occur on opening the file.

Now we turn to email. On a Mondy morning the receptionist recieves an email telling them the invoice file from last week is available to download by clicking the link. Today the receptionist called in sick so nobody got the file until 9:00 AM. We're now behind...

It turns out that the link in the email goes to an FTP server. The invoice file is actually available for download by about 4:00 AM every Monday. The CMS solution is a tiny Windows Service that wakes up every hour and loads a config file. If it's time to look for the invoices, it downloads the file to a local server. That's all it does but it can look at many FTP servers.

There's another Windows Service that is listening for a file to drop into a folder. When the file drops, the service checks it's a ZIP file and then unzips it into the correct folder. If the folder doesn't exist, it makes one.

When the staff arrive on a Monday morning all the invoices are ready for them whether the receptionist reads the email or not.

A CMS is more than just a database. The CMS should operate quietly in the background enabling the office to run smoothly and efficiently. It is also used to collect data on workflows by logging network events. Over time this data can be used to detect patterns and improve efficency.

Worksite Visitor and On Boarding Specialists.

The Robots are coming! AI will change everything!

The robots are coming. It's a certainty at this point. If you own a business intending to invest in robots, you are going to need to communicate the safety regulations and requirements for visitors to your business. Not doing so leaves your business vulnerable to litigation. Something no business needs nor wants.

That is a safe assumption. Visitors are still going to need to come to your workplace, even if it's just to repair the robots.

A business has two options. Take the initiative and formulate their own heaslth and safety policies for managing robot/human interaction. Wait until the incidents occur and subsequant regulations are issued by the appropriate authorities. Hopefully the incidents don't occur at your work site.

What's your policy on robots bought into the work place for maintenance services? How about your human employees bringing in personal robots?

Yes! Everything will change? Are you ready for it? Well, Come Aboard site induction web-ware

Bespoke Enterprise Intranet Solutions.

Let's take a look at a production enterprise.

This is a high volume, low cost beverage manufacturing enterprise. They employ around 400 people operating high speed bottling and packaging lines. Downtime costs money and stopping the line is avoided as much as possible. Production runs 3 shifts per day.

When there's a problem with a machine the supervisor calls maintanence to send a fitter, or electrician, to get the machine back on line. For reasons beyond anyone's control, the nearest fitter is 5 minutes walk away. The maintanence staff numbers have been reduced lately and a fitter may be servicing another line so, the wait is longer.

The downtime here is the line stopping. The fitter getting to the line. The fitter listening to the workers before diagnosing the problem.

What can an intranet do for a production line?

The pallet stacking machine starts crunching cartons. The operator stops the machine and calls the supervisor. Then starts cleaning up as the cartons start stacking up in the overflow bay.

The supervisor assesses the situation and calls maintanence. The fitter is just finishing a job and will be along shortly. The supervisor helps clean up the mess.

The fitter returns to his toolbox and looks at his tablet. The job queue shows a problem with the pallet stacker on line 2. Jim just started work last week and its all still new to him.

As Jim walks to line 2 he pulls up the history of maintanence on the line 2 pallet stacker. He sees Henry made adjustments to the carton guides last shift. Before that a sensor had been replaced on the pallet in-feed shute.

Jim listens to the operator and supervisor as he checks the carton guides. Everything seems in order. Next he checks the sensor. A screw had worked loose with the virbrations and the loose sensor caused a carton misalignment. Jim applies a little locktite and problem solved.

Jim takes a photo and updates the maintanence log with what he just learned.

Thanks the the intranet, maintanence staff now have an ever growing history of all problems that have occurred on any machine and fixes that worked. All this can be learned as they walk to the next job. Efficiency. All new staff and contractors now know as much as anybody else with access to the maintanence log. Efficiency.

The office

The business of running a business has moved from data being ossified instantly on paper to data being locked up in Excel spreadsheets and archived to ZIP files.

In Excel world each cog in the machine does the data entry. Only once the spreadsheets are closed can the data collation into yet more spreadsheets begin. Copies are made. Links are inserted into emails. Versions are made and local copies need updating. More emails are sent asking when they can have the file. Reports are produced. Work appears to be getting done. Here's the email.

In the bespoke intranet world the data that needs to be reported on is collected in realtime from the data sources. This could be input from a sensor, from an IoT enabled sensor, from a human, from a robot. Any required source. Reports are generated on demand from either a snapshot of current data, in the case of high speed data feeds, or current live data, in the case of a typical business.
